Friday April 13th, my mom and I went to UCSF for a bone marrow biopsy. This was in preparation of her starting her treatments for MDS (this is pre-leukaemia caused by the treatments for her leukaemia). After her appointment we had a lovely lunch at WildFox. About 8:00 pm on that night my mom called to tell me she was being admitted.
UCSF had contacted her and advised her that she needed to be admitted on Saturday. How I am understanding it is that the MDS has progressed to leukaemia, so she has officially relapsed. We got a hold of all her siblings and packed her up with the idea that she will be at UCSF for ten to twenty days. Ten days for her treatment, and longer if her immune system is too low.
Off we went bright and early to USCF by 10:00 am. I was EXTREMELY FRUSTRATED with how things went once we got there!!! They didn't have a bed on 11 long or in the overflow rooms on the 14th floor. So, while I am sure the nurses on this floor are great at what they do... they weren't so hot on being aware of my mother's case and why she was there.
She started out with a roommate... a very talkative roommate! After being there for a few hours Dr. Wolf along with his intern pack came into give us the scoop. The reason for her being admitted on Saturday was due to the PIC team didn't work on Sundays and she needed to have a pic installed (for lack of better word!) so she could start treatment immediately. Unfortunately they didn't have a bed for her on the Hematology-Oncology floor so, they got her in where they could with the intention of her moving rooms to 11 long or at least the over flow on the 14th floor. This day seemed to be a full day of waiting... waiting to be admitted... waiting for the Dr. ... waiting for the meds... waiting for the PIC team... waiting for the return of the Dr... waiting for the private room... waiting for info...
The PIC team finally arrived... they were AWESOME!!! Due to mom not getting her pre-meds for the pic line... we all ended up with a couple of rounds of 5 crowns (card game) while we waited for the meds to kick in. There was a small road block with her getting the line on her right side so... both arms ended up with holes! But, it got in and she started her chemo last night! Not too long after the line got put in we got moved to a private room in the overflow Oncology on the 14th floor! Yippee!!! Now we have the nurses in the know!
I talked to her this morning everything seems to be going well. She will have visitors today and tomorrow and on Thursday for sure... and will see how the other days go!
Mom anything to add or correct????
